History Made at the Grammys
February 10, 2023
The 65th Annual Grammy Awards took place on February 5th, 2023. It was a star-studded event with musical artists from all over the world coming to recognize the best in their field. This year’s show was unique, however, as history was made on more than one occasion.
Firstly, Bad Bunny’s album Un Verano Sin Ti was the first non-English album to be nominated for Album of the Year. This is an amazing accomplishment for a man who has been dominating the international music world in recent years, and it was well deserved. In addition to this, he opened the show with a showstopping performance that featured many uniquely Puerto Rican symbols like the “cabezudos” or paper mâché heads which were worn by dancers.
History was also made by Kim Petras who became the first openly transgender woman to win a Grammy. She won her Grammy for her song “Unholy” with Sam Smith which was released last September. They won the award for Best Pop Duo/ Group performance. This was a very significant win and showed how more and more LGBTQ+ people are being acknowledged in music and media.
Finally, at the Grammy Awards Beyonce became the person with the most Grammy wins in history. She now has a total of 32 Grammy wins to her name with 88 nominations per the Grammy Awards’ official website. Beyonce’s first nomination dates back to 1999 when she was nominated for both Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and Best Rhythm & Blues Song for “Bills, Bills, Bills” which she released with her band at the time, Destiny’s Child. This event is significant because Beyonce has solidified her place as one of the best musical artists of all time, and she has the awards to prove it.
