STEAM is different from STEM. Though they both deal with math, science, technology, and engineering, STEAM includes the category of the arts. This distincts the two because STEAM is an educational approach that utilizes the five categories previously listed to engage students in meaningful discussions sparking student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. Whereas STEM is utilizing the five categories and applying them through investigations, problem-solving, and evidence-based scenarios.
On the October 17th meeting, the WiSTEAM club began. The officers applied the STEAM approach to learning by initiating a group discussion on the topic of gender bias in STEAM. A presentation was showcased to help guide the group discussions and give the facts on the topic. The members engaged in the discussion by sharing their experiences as well as suggesting possible solutions to fix this prevalent issue in the field of STEAM. The discussion included talking with the whole group and speaking one-on-one to other members.
If you identify as a woman, non-binary, and/or femme-presenting and are interested in STEAM/STEM or simply want to create change, then this club is for you. The club meets once per month, and provides an opportunity for people with the same interests and diverse backgrounds to converse and learn about social issues, the STEM field, and other issues prevalent in society.
It is also a great opportunity to get to know other people who have similar interests as you! This club is a safe space to speak your mind about changes you want to see, or how you have been affected by issues such as gender bias as discussed at the last meeting. This club also provides service hours through volunteering at club events or doing extra work– such as discussing with a woman in STEAM how/if they have been impacted by gender bias in their field– outside of the club to bring to the next discussion.
If any of the above sparks your interest, and you’d like to receive service hours, come to the November meeting! You can follow WiSTEAM on Instagram @ophswisteam (not affiliated with PWCS) to receive updates or simply be on the lookout for a canvas announcement when the next meeting date nears!
